I confess... I'm a Light Lover / Lo confieso...Soy un amante de la luz

It was a simple thing to do, take a photo of my registration for my next 5K run because besides of loving photography I enjoy sports. It was something simple then, about 10 minutes for the post + photo. But, after I took the first photo, I realized that it was not the image I was aiming for, so I looked for a better angle trying to get the best out of the ambience light but no. It didn't convince me, I wanted something for shocking, it's one of those days when I look for intensity so after a few more shots, I used the Speed Light System from Nikon. Simple photography with natural light is like my girlfriend, I should find it's exact angle, the blending of colors and the correct hours for it. However, with controlled light I confess it turns into my lover. Final time to post: 47 minutes.


La idea era simple, tomar una fotografía de mi confirmación de registro para mi próxima carrera de 5K, hablar un poco de mi, pues además de la fotografía adoro hacer deporte, subir el nuevo post e irme a correr, tiempo estimado, 10 minutos, esa era la teoría, pero después de tomar la primer fotografía, me di cuenta que la calidad de la luz no era precisamente lo que buscaba, busqué un mejor ángulo tratando de buscar mejorar la luz ambiental, pero no, no me convencía del todo, quería algo mas impactante, hoy ando en mis días que busco intensidad en todo lo que hago, así que después de varias pruebas terminé utilizando el sistema speed light de Nikon. La fotografía simple, luz ambiental, es como mi novia, tengo que buscarle el ángulo, los matices, sus horas, pero la fotografía con luz controlada, definitivamente me confieso su amante. Tiempo final para este post, 47 minutos.

The 2010 Austin Addys Awards

Last night I had the pleasure to meet fabulous and creative people at the Addy Awards 2010 in the city of Austin, TX. Congratulations to all of those for their noble participation in such a prestigious creative event.

Plus, I want to congratulate in a special way my friend Jenaro Diaz who I consider one of the best web designers. Jenaro won Bronze in his category for that, I congratulate him and thank him for inviting me to be a part of his project by producing his website photography.

We aim for Gold next year!


Anoche tuve el placer de conocer a personas fabulosas y creativas en la entrega de los premios Addys en la ciudad de Austin, TX. Felicidades a todos ellos por su notable participación en tan prestigiado evento creativo.

Además, quiero felicitar de manera especial a mi amigo Jenaro Díaz a quién profesionalmente considero como uno de los mejores web designer, por haber ganado el Bronze en su categoría, y por haberme invitado a participar en la producción de la fotografía para su website.

Sometimes the client lets you create and decide the creative&artistic concept of the photograph. This was an occassion. The client asked me to create a photograph for an editorial story related to the adult sexual fantasies (and not so adult too).

Algunas veces el cliente te deja proponer y decidir libremente el concepto creativo y artístico de la fotografía, en esta ocasión así fué. El cliente me solicitó crear una fotografía para un artículo editorial relacionado con las fantasías sexuales de las personas adultas (y no tan adultas).

To be a photographer for me is to see what others do not see. To interpret light and shadow. To dream about my next photograph, learn something new everyday, to experiment, to share, to get dirty, to get wet, to stay up late, to create and dare. Para mi, ser fotógrafo es ver lo que los demás no ven, interpretar la luz y la sombra, soñar mi proxima fotografía, aprender algo nuevo cada día, es experimentar, es compartir, es ensucirme, es mojarme, es desvelarme, es proponer, es atreverme, es manejar 16 horas continuas sabiendo que valió la pena, es descubrir, es descubrirme, es pasión, es entrega, es ver lo bello en un montón de basura.

I normally shoot in RAW format. Why? Simple. RAW format will always give you the chance to use it in the best way possible when it is generated electronically. You can control temperature, highlights, midtones, shadows, saturations, etc. You’ll never know when you can get a really good photograph for photo stock.

Una práctica que tengo tiempo de realizar es tirar siempre en formato RAW, sea cuál sea la ocasión, el por que, simple, el formato RAW siempre te dará la oportunidad de sacarle mayor provecho al archivo electrónico generado, temperatura, altas luces, sombras, medios tonos, saturaciones, etc. Nunca sabes cuando pueda salir una buena fotografía para venta de photo stock.

Kiekari tsie hai yuruxetriett / Town of Clouds (The Exhibit)

It has been seven months since Daniela and me were at the mountains of Jalisco living with natives named Wirrarika. This year the photographs I took will be exhibited in different parts of Mexico and the United States. The exhibit is called Kiekari tsie hai yuruxetriett / Town of Clouds. More than a showing of my work, I take some time to think how grateful I am to capture with my lens a story of a town that continues to live. This is just a tease of the total 50 photograph to be shown.

Han pasado siete meses desde que Daniela y yo estuvimos en las sierra de Jalisco conviviendo con el pueblo indígena Wirrarika, este año comienza a exhibirse en diferentes partes de México y de Estados Unidos la exposición Kiekari tsie hai yuruxetriett / El Pueblo de las Nubes. Más que una muestra de mi trabajo como fotógrafo, es un honor para mi haber sido agraciado de poder captar con mi lente la historia de un pueblo que se niega a morir. Esta es solo una pequeña muestra de las 50 fotografías que componen la exposición.

Austin Monthly Mag January Cover

In this post, I will talk about the process I went through to create the photography used in the cover of Austin Monthly magazine in its January 2010 issue, Fitness. The first thing that I try to do is to visit the location, see its obstacles and advantages that I may have at the moment I begin the photo shoot. In this case, the photo had to be taken inside water, which implied having to have my lightning equipment inside the water to which it is a much greater risk. Luckily, I found a zone where I could go inside water and get 5 meters down in the lake but being able to have a solid ground. Once that issue was solved, the second thing is to take a few shots to use them as a reference for the location and basing my creative ideas in the preview shots. Note: These type of practices will help you to avoid awkward moments with your client and not having a clue of what you are about to photograph.

En esta ocasión les platicaré del proceso que segui para crear la fotografía utilizada en la revista Austin Monthley para su portada de la edición de Enero 2010. Lo primero que procuro hacer siempre que se de la oportunidad es conocer la locación, sus ventajas y obstáculos que tendré al momento de la sesión, en este caso, la fotografía tendría que ser dentro del agua, lo que implica tener que exponer tanto el equipo de iluminación como la cámara y lentes a un riesgo mayor, por suerte, encontré una zona donde podría adentrarme unos 5 metros dentro del lago logrando mantener un suelo estable. Una vez resuelto este asunto, lo segundo es tomar un par de fotografías para usarlas como referencia de la locación, de esa forma, puedo comenzar a dibujar mis bocetos preliminares de lo que será la idea gráfica de la fotografía. Nota: Hacer este tipo de prácticas te ayudará en gran medida al momento de tu sesión fotográfica evitando de esta forma momentos incómodos de "y ahora que voy a tomar!".

The day of the photo shoot I try to be there at least 30 minutes before my team and my client. This time helps me to take advantage to do the last reviewing of location, set up lightning and start the test shots so I can avoid wasting my time or the other people’s times. Note: When you are photographing on water either it is inside or playing with it, use tapes in the terminals of the equipment, use light (not heavy) equipment and be sure that the umbrellas and softboxes have the sufficient weight to be held to the ground.

El día de la sesión, procuro llegar por lo menos media hora antes que todos, de esta forma me da tiempo suficiente para hacer una última revisión, preparar el equipo y comenzar a hacer las pruebas de luz, evitando desperdiciar mi tiempo y el de los demás. Nota: Siempre que vayas a tomar con agua o dentro del agua, procura revisar cuidadosamente, aisla con cinta impermeable las terminales, usa equipo ligero y asegura que los tripies con sombrillas o difusores tengan el contrapeso necesario par evitar que el viento las vuele.

Thursday, 9 am

Thursday morning. I can see that people are driving to their jobs, some with coffee in their hands, in a hurry... My shorts and my tennis tell that no, I am not driving to a work meeting. I feel the cold water in my feet, Rocco splashes water where he walks. I'm happy. He is happy. The trees tell us that autumn is here. My camera in my hand, ready to shoot the first photograph of the day. 9 am. I own my life, I am a photographer.

Jueves por la mañana, aun veo pasar a la gente en traje conduciendo hacia sus trabajos, algunos con cafe en mano, algunos con prisa, mis shorts y tennis me delatan, no voy a la oficina ni a una junta de trabajo, siento el agua fria en mis pies, Rocco pasa a mi lado salpicando por todas partes, es feliz, soy feliz, los arboles señalan el cambio de temporada, mi camara en mano lista para el primer disparo del día, son las 9 de la mañana, soy dueño de mi vida, soy fotógrafo.
