31K Portraits for Peace | 31Mil Retratos por la Paz

In a period of no more than 5 years, 31,000 people have died as a result of the violence that Mexico is actually living. It is expected that the number will rise within the next years.

In order to have a more clear idea about how 31,000 is a very important number, let’s work around the next statistics. 31,000 means:
  • To kill all the people twice that work in the Empire State Building in the city of New York.
  • To kill all the passengers of 80 Boeing 474 planes.
  • To repeat 9/11 tradegy 12 times.
  • The disappearance of the population in countries like San Marino, Monaco and San Martin.
  • To repeat the floods of the Titanic 20.35 times.
In different states of Mexico, the population has organized against NO violence, and have walked for peace in different occasions. Unfortunately the impact of these walks is limited because it stays a few moments in the person and the results are often forgotten.

31K is a project that will unite 31,000 people who live in Mexico and who don’t live in the country but are only looking for peace. I plan to photograph these 31,000 people in a period of 180 days or less. There will be no distinction between their color of their skin, social status, religion or political beliefs.

I will go visit the 32 states in Mexico and some on the US, take approx. 1000 photographs per state. I want to met 31,000 people who are real and who want to volunteer and be a part of a once-in-a-lifetime project.

Once that the project is more advanced, the photographs will be printed in black and white and posted in the streets of Mexico’s most violated cities so people can understand that they are not alone. So people can see that there is more than one person who wishes peace, and if we all unite, it will happen.

Shoe Shiner | El Bolero

There are images that are stuck in your head for the rest of your life. And yesterday night I was just in front of one. During my childhood it was very common for me to hang around this image. "The Shoe Shiner" is a very important character in Mexican culture, however in danger of being extinct. The legacy of "Shoe Shining" will stay in thousands of Mexicans thanks to great actors like Pedro Infante and/or Mario Moreno "Cantinflas" and I hope one day, this photograph helps to preserve the "Shoe Shiner" experience through time.

Today was exciting to be in front of my Huichol models once again exhibited in CEDIM. Almost three months later after presenting the project at DesignWeek, I saw them and remembered what happened behind the photos, all the effort, the work and the professionalism of the people that I worked with to shoot each of them. There are some that till don't get "Quiereme", don0t understand it and cannot process it, but "Quiéreme" is just that, in its own nature.

CEDIM is the last stop that "Quiereme" makes before leaving Mexican territory and be translated to International cultural and artistic spaces.

Mircea, Michael, Pascal, thanks again!

School Bus

Every night Rocco and I walk around our neighborhood. It's a 30 minutes walk. We have more than a year taking the same route, and every time when we hang out, we walk through a middle school, and there's where I have seen a big yellow school bus, breaking the monotony of the night, which is peaceful, quiet, resting from a long day with many children jumping, screaming and laughing. And it was last night, when I decided to take my camera (Leica X1) and accept the invitation to photograph them. It almost was like the bus driver accommodated the bus for me, in the perfect spot, with the perfect light. I was lucky to be there last night, and Rocco as well.

Make Up Artist

I'm still doing my backups from last year, a job that has been constant for 12 days of this year.

And it was precisely at this moment that I rediscovered this series taken in October last year for a friend of mine, Juan González, from Binna Cosmetics. At this event I met this young make up artist, and I when I say young and artist I literally mean it. Her name is Mayela Sepúlveda.

So, I want to take some time to recognize and thank those who are behind of many photographs and which nobody knows about. Those who take care of hair, make up, styling...BRAVO!

Because, a photograph is much more than clicking a button.
