I am a photographer not an illustrator | Soy fotógrafo, no ilustrador

A very controversial subject...photographer or illustrator? An enormous difference between one thing and the other. Thanks to the actual technology of digital photography and the editing software we have reached an era where the photography is confused with the illustration considering special effects and situations that Hollywood productions can only create. Nowadays, it is possible to see surprising graphics where the explosions, flying animals and characters appear to come out of an action movie or a comic to become the main characters of the shot, which turns photography into something more.

Will be fair to say that illustration is taking photography’s place? Will it be fair to say that the editing software is of course taking the old-school working system where a production was needed and the sets were scouted, as the formation of a team which contemplated wardrobe styling, props, ambience and what we need for a shot? Where are we going with these new tendencies of advertising that everyday demands shots that are more complex and implausible?

Personally, I like to think that I’m a photographer. I like to demand myself and create the shots that are required without depending on a computer or third parties to finish the work that I have begun. I think it is time to differ a photography from an illustration. I must confess that I use some editing software, but, this is only a tool, not my final result and I do not depend on it. I may not have fairytale stories in my portfolio....maybe never because I am a photographer not an illustrator.

Un tema muy polémico sin lugar a dudas, fotógrafo o ilustrador?, una enorme diferencia entre una cosa y la otra. Gracias a la tecnología actual como lo es la fotografía digital y los programas de edición de fotografía hemos llegado a una era donde la fotografía se confunde con la ilustración a base de efectos especiales y situaciones que solo las producciones de Hollywood nos tenían acostumbrados a ver, hoy en día es posible ver gráficas sorprendentes donde las explosiones, animales voladores y personajes que parecen salidos de películas de acción o historietas animadas son los protagonistas, es justo en ese punto donde la fotografía se convierte en algo mas que eso.

Sería justo decir que hoy en día la ilustración está desplazando a la fotografía?, es justo decir que los programas de edición están desplazando al viejo sistema donde había un trabajo de producción donde se buscaban los sets, vestuario, props, ambientación y todo lo que rodea a una toma?, hacía donde nos está arrastrando las nuevas tendencias de publicidad que cada día exige tomas mas complejas e inverosímiles?

En lo personal me gusta pensar que soy un fotógrafo al cuál le gusta exigirse a si mismo crear tomas que requieran de todas mis capacidades sin tener que depender de una computadora o de terceras personas que terminen el trabajo que comencé, creo que es hora de diferenciar una fotografía de una ilustración, confieso que al igual que muchos utilizo la edición digital, solo como una herramienta más de mi trabajo, no como una herramienta de la cuál dependa en su totalidad, y si, tal vez nunca llegue a tener un portafolio repleto de situaciones maravillosas salidas de un cuento de hadas, por que soy fotógrafo, no ilustrador.
