Shoe Shiner | El Bolero

There are images that are stuck in your head for the rest of your life. And yesterday night I was just in front of one. During my childhood it was very common for me to hang around this image. "The Shoe Shiner" is a very important character in Mexican culture, however in danger of being extinct. The legacy of "Shoe Shining" will stay in thousands of Mexicans thanks to great actors like Pedro Infante and/or Mario Moreno "Cantinflas" and I hope one day, this photograph helps to preserve the "Shoe Shiner" experience through time.

Hay imágenes en la memoria que se nos quedan grabadas por el resto de nuestras vidas. Y ayer por la noche me topé frente a frente con una de esas imágenes que en mi infancia era muy frecuente observar, "El Bolero". Un personaje tan importante que forma parte de la riqueza cultural mexicana, una especie en peligro de extinción. Su legado quedará en la memoria de miles de mexicanos gracias a actores como Pedro Infante o Mario Moreno Cantinflas, y espero que algún día, esta fotografía contribuya a preservar en los anales del tiempo a El Bolero.

Today was exciting to be in front of my Huichol models once again exhibited in CEDIM. Almost three months later after presenting the project at DesignWeek, I saw them and remembered what happened behind the photos, all the effort, the work and the professionalism of the people that I worked with to shoot each of them. There are some that till don't get "Quiereme", don0t understand it and cannot process it, but "Quiéreme" is just that, in its own nature.

CEDIM is the last stop that "Quiereme" makes before leaving Mexican territory and be translated to International cultural and artistic spaces.

El día de hoy fué emocionante para mi re encontrarme con mis modelos huicholas, las cuáles están siendo exhibidas en CEDIM. A casi tres meses de haber presentado el proyecto por primera vez en el marco del Design Week, volví a verlas y volví a recordar todo el esfuerzo, trabajo y profesionalismo que hay detrás de cada una de ellas, a la fecha hay personas que aún no entienden Quiéreme, no lo asimilan, no lo procesan, no lo aceptan, pero Quiéreme es justo eso, es su naturaleza.

CEDIM es la última parada en territorio mexicano antes de ser trasladada a varios espacios artísticos y culturales en el extranjero.

Party all night, friends around me, a Shiner in my left hand and a Leica in my right.

School Bus

Every night Rocco and I walk around our neighborhood. It's a 30 minutes walk. We have more than a year taking the same route, and every time when we hang out, we walk through a middle school, and there's where I have seen a big yellow school bus, breaking the monotony of the night, which is peaceful, quiet, resting from a long day with many children jumping, screaming and laughing. And it was last night, when I decided to take my camera (Leica X1) and accept the invitation to photograph them. It almost was like the bus driver accommodated the bus for me, in the perfect spot, with the perfect light. I was lucky to be there last night, and Rocco as well.

Cada noche salgo a caminar con Rocco cerca de donde vivimos, es una caminata de 30 minutos, llevamos más de un año haciendo nuestro recorrido, y cada vez que salimos y pasamos por la escuela que está en nuestro camino veo unos camiones escolares color amarillos que rompen la monotonía de la noche, tranquilos, relajadas, descansando del largo día donde tuvieron a decenas de niños arriba de ellos gritando, saltando y riendo. Y fué justo anoche, que decidí salir con mi cámara (Leica X1) y aceptar la invitación que cada noche me hacían de poder retratarlos, y fué así, parecía que sus choferes los habían acomodado para mi, parecía que alguien intencionalmente los había estacionado en el lugar ideal con la luz ideal, para mi suerte, anoche estuve ahí, y Rocco también.

I'm still doing my backups from last year, a job that has been constant for 12 days of this year.

And it was precisely at this moment that I rediscovered this series taken in October last year for a friend of mine, Juan González, from Binna Cosmetics. At this event I met this young make up artist, and I when I say young and artist I literally mean it. Her name is Mayela Sepúlveda.

So, I want to take some time to recognize and thank those who are behind of many photographs and which nobody knows about. Those who take care of hair, make up, styling...BRAVO!

Because, a photograph is much more than clicking a button.

Aún sigo haciendo mis respaldos fotográficos del 2010, una labor que me ha llevado 12 días del presente año.

Y fué precisamente haciendo mi respaldo que di con esta serie que tomé en en Octubre del año pasado para un muy buen amigo, Juan González de Binna Cosmetics. Fué ahí donde conocí a esta joven artista del maquillaje, y cuando digo joven y artista lo digo en sentido literal, Mayela Sepúlveda.

Así que quiero aprovechar este post para dar mi mas sincero reconocimiento a esas personas que están detrás de tantas y tantas fotografías y que nadie sabe de ellos, quiénes cuidan del peinado, maquillaje, estilismo, a todos ellos, BRAVO!

Mom's cupcakes

I don't know how much you can do for you mom, mother, mommy, ma, or however you want to call the woman who gave you life, but in my case, I'll do anything for her. I'm not a still life photographer, but I can't deny her to photograph her baking, which besides looking so good, it tastes soooo good. I can show off that the flavor is one of the best since I was paid in species (I would've been dumb if I hadn't)

No se que tanto hagan por sus mamás, madres, jefecitas, jefas, o como quieran llamarles a las mujeres que les dieron la vida, pero en mi caso, por ella hago todo. No soy fotógrafo still life pero como negarle a tu madre el fotografiar su repostería que además de verse tan bien, sabe taaaan bien, bueno, puedo presumir de su sabor pues en esta ocasión hice una excepción y el pago fué en especie (tonto de mi si no hubiera aceptado ese tipo de pagos!)

Es delicioso ser fotógrafo!

Small tools for a Big Super Hero | Herramientas pequeñas para su gran Super Héroe

Today I want to show you what you can do whit the little equipment you may have. The truth is, as a photographer you should be prepared for any kind of situation you may encounter. It is a commissioned project or a personal one. But, let's be honest, you can't always have your speedlights or strobes with you, because is impractical or risk. That is why you should use what you have around you. In this case, my iPad whit the app Photo Soft Pro HD and my Promaster LED42 (constant light), were my sources of light.

What is interesting about this besides the result, is that the tablets like iPad are getting popular and are available for everyone, and are now a tool for the photographers. With a cost of $2.99 dlls you have an app that turns into a photography tool and not a simple gadget. The Promaster LED 42 doesn't cost more than $150 dlls in photography stores.

What matters is not how much or how little equipment you have, but to use it at full.

Hoy nuevamente quiero mostrar lo mucho que uno puede hacer con lo poco que puedas tener (o lo que tus recursos te lo permitan). La verdad es, que uno como fotógrafo debe de estar preparado todo el tiempo para cualquier situación que se te presente, ya sea un proyecto comisionado o personal, pero seamos honestos, no siempre puede andar cargando uno sus speedlights o estrobos, es impráctico y en algunas ocasiones arriesgado (para los que viven en el norte y noreste de México saben de lo que estoy hablando). Es por eso que uno se tiene que valer de lo que tiene a la mano. En esta ocasión, mi iPad con la aplicación Photo Soft Pro HD, la cuál debo decir me ha dejado mas que satisfecho, funciona tanto para iPad como para iPhone, y mi Promaster LED42 (luz continua), con la cuál iluminé la pared que se encuentra detrás del mini Superman.

Lo interesante de todo esto además del resultado, es que las tablets como lo es el iPad comienzan a ser tan populares y están tan al alcance de todo mundo que se han convertido en una herramienta más para los fotógrafos, y con apenas $2.99 dlls que cuesta la aplicación tienes una importante herramienta de trabajo, no solamente un simple gadget. El valor del Promaster LED42 no supera los $150 dlls en tiendas especializadas en Estados Unidos.

Lo importante no es que tan mucho o que tan poco tengas, lo importante es saber usarlo a su máxima capacidad.
